Thomasville City Schools received a District Grant for the 2014-2015 school year from Fuel Up to Play 60. Our physical activity play was to increase physical activity after school for students by adding the GO FAR running club to each of our four schools. TCS had 70 students participate in the GO FAR running club during spring semester. Representing the runners were four running coaches: Toni Tricarico, Brian Kennedy, Hailey Cox, and Chris McBride. Students began practicing weekly in March for 10 weeks. Each week the students practiced running for longer distances as part of their training for the GO FAR 5K on May 9.TCS_runners

The GO FAR curriculum also helped to reinforce character education and nutrition education. Healthy snacks were prepared by school nutrition and provided for each runner after every practice. On May 9, our students loaded up on the activity bus and headed to High Point for the Triad GO FAR 5K race.

We had 57 students entered in the race. Nequareus Simon and Cameron Walker were our fastest runners. Simon completed the 5K with a time of 26:30 and Walker with a 26:48. All of our runners did exceptionally well training and running. Our coaches were very supportive and enjoyed working with the students. GO FAR was a success this semester and we look forward to continuing the program in the fall.
