Ellie Kania, one of the GO FAR coaches at Rush Creek Elementary, Minn., shares about her summer program, part of Osseo Area Schools’ Kidstop summer care program. The school is one of five in the Osseo district that participates in the summer program.

Our club had grown quite a bit in the past few years. This year out of about 300 kids we have 277 signed up for GO FAR. One thing we do that may be a bit different than other GO FAR clubs is the mascots we have every Friday, anything from our school’s mascots, to Minions, to Olaf. The kids really enjoy having a “special guest” visit them while they run each week. Another thing we like to do is effort awards. Each Friday we award 8-10 kids for trying their best, being a supportive friend, etc. This really motivates kids to keep trying their best throughout the program. We also put on a 5K/1 mile race at the end of summer through our district. This is something that the kids can look forward to as an end goal. We try our best to make GO FAR and running in general be a fun activity for the kids and look forward to doing so each week!
