GO FAR students try out their new shoes.

Through GO FAR’s Lace Up Shoe Scholarship Fund, 26 GO FAR students from the combined Bluford/Peeler Elementary School in Greensboro received brand-new running shoes this week.

The kids were excited to get their shoes, jumping and running laps to make sure they were up to the task of next month’s 5K.

Coach Jennifer Smith says it’s been an adjustment since the two schools merged after a tornado caused damage to Peeler last April.

“Since losing our building and merging schools, the kids have been struggling for a sense of belonging and normalcy,” she says. “By being able to run GO FAR with kids from both Peeler and Bluford, the kids are building a new community."

They are grateful for the shoes. “The gift of running shoes has made the children realize how much support they have from the community at large,” Smith says.

The Lace Up Scholarship is funded through local donors, and schools are chosen based on need. Omega Sports of the Triad and New Balance shoes are partners in the program.

The kids can put their new shoes to the test at the GO FAR Family 5K & Fun Run on Nov. 17 in downtown High Point.
