For the last 5 years, Mickey Walker has been on the Board of Directors for GO FAR, serving on the Executive Committee for three of those. He stays very involved in all we do, now leading the Board Selction Committee and serving on our Race Committee. We feel incredibly lucky to have such a devoted and involved board member and friend in Mickey. Read on to find out a little more about why we love Mickey and why Mickey loves GO FAR.
Hey Mickey, for those who don't know you, tell us a little about yourself.
I have lived and worked in High Point my entire life. Married with no children. Employment with Harris Teeter, Boyles Furniture, Hartley YMCA. I have remained active in the community working with my church, mobile meals, Open Door Ministries, past driver for the High Point Cancer Center, GO FAR, YMCA volunteer. I enjoy tennis, golf, working out, and running(not as much now but ran for 40 years). New hobby taken up is ball room dancing.
How has involvement with GO FAR impacted your life?
I was a coach for Jamestown Elementary for 3 years and was able to see the kids reach the goal of running a 5K race. Some of the kids were able to run from day one but others had to be encouraged each training day to give it just a little more effort in order to reach their goal. This was also the life lesson discussed each day we ran. In life you have to put in the effort to be successful and what we are working on is goal setting not just for a 5K but for life.
What is one character trait that has been beneficial to you in your own life that you have seen GO FAR help children to develop?
I am not a natural athlete but found through effort and encouragement from other runners that I could do more than I thought possible. I have to say that many members of the GO FAR board have given me the push needed to run marathons. I guess I had to decide if others could do it so could I.
What is one goal that you have for 2021, or one thing you are looking forward to this year?
I think everyone active with GO FAR is hoping to see the races with school kids again this Spring and if not then, in the Fall.
You said you were a runner, what is your favorite lesson learned from running?
Putting in time and effort in whatever you are doing pays off.
What is one of your favorite memories from your time with GO FAR?
I would say training the kids and watching them on race day complete race and receive a medal.
Do you have a favorite Triad based restaurant or small business?
Biscuit Factory, Corner Grill, Real Bar. These are local business owners and I enjoy the food.
Mickey, thanks for making GO FAR and our community better!
